May 12, 2022I can remember the moment vividly.
I sat in my big girl office, two blinking monitors staring back at my tired eyes. The plaque on the door held my name on top of a title that should have been every single dream come true. I sucked in a breath that should have been big enough to make the sinking feeling go away. The feeling that would force me to come to terms with the fact that maybe it’s okay to change the dream you always thought you wanted. Maybe it’s okay to climb the really big mountain and to get to the top and admit that the view isn’t what you thought it would be. Coming to terms with those things meant making a really brave and hard decision. A decision that forced me to walk away from a title that the world would find worthy of applause, to step out on shaky legs, and find a new dream.I never imagined this would be my career, sitting here writing a blog that tributes mothers on their day. A tribute to the most influential, steady, challenging, and grounded voice I have ever heard in my life. My biggest cheerleader, my best friend, my home, my boss; my mama, Lisa.
Many of you that have had the privilege to know her, know she is fiery, strong in her convictions, and loves in a way that makes you feel deserving of it. She is all of those things to so many people, but I am the luckiest to call her mine.
For those of you that are new here, I am Mackenzie, Luxology’s registered nurse and the self-proclaimed creative mind behind the brand of LUX(ology). Before there was Lux, there was Lisa. Lisa, the passionate and fearless dreamer behind what we know as LUX today. Silently, I watched her lay the foundation of LUX, each heavy brick ladened in love and hope and each one creating a space for any single person to feel known and loved and enough.

She showed up. Unsure of how to run a business but absolutely sure of what she knew LUX would one day be, she tried, she failed, she continued, she triumphed.
Never asking for anything in return. In LUX’s early days, I was working as a Registered Nurse in a pediatric psychiatric facility. I was proud of what she was creating but from a distance. Believing wholeheartedly in her mission while also feeling like I had a career to establish, never imagining a place for me within the walls she had built.Fast forward to the fall of 2020, LUX is full of people that had fallen in love with what it offered, but more so full of people who had fallen in love with the way my mom had made them feel and the home she had created. I found myself in my “dream job” and was so afraid to admit that it didn’t set my heart on fire in all the ways I thought it would.
I remember being 24 whole years old and crawling on her lap on the couch on a Tuesday afternoon, brave enough to admit that I couldn't continue doing something that didn’t feel fulfilling but human enough to admit I was unsure what the next steps would look like. She didn’t look at me with disappointment, she didn’t tell me I was making a mistake by walking away from every ounce of hard work, she didn’t ask questions, instead, she scooped me and prayed for clarity, we prayed for a path, we prayed for peace.
Peace came, and it came in the form of LUX making room for me. There were growing pains, mostly just because I would rather go through the drive-thru and get shot up with some fillers whereas my mom believes the fountain of youth is found in a green shake. We found that maybe both can be true.
We soon saw the beauty of the coming together from opposite ends and understood that our differences only enrich a space that promises beauty is from the inside out. That’s truly a mission that sets both of our hearts on fire. A mission that promises you are worth it. One that screams, when you feel good, you do good.
That is mostly all we ever hope you know us as - a mom and a daughter who pinch themselves every day when we put on our matching uniforms and walk hand in hand together into our dream spilling out of the four walls. Simply because we get to love and be loved by all of you.
I no longer sit and ask, “is this really it?” Instead, I have my Monday morning meetings in my slippers next to my mom on the very same couch we prayed for clarity on, and there is not a day that goes by that I am not overwhelmingly thankful for who my mama is to me, who she is to all of you, and who she is to LUX(ology).
A Mother’s Day tribute to my favorite human being in the whole world, and a Mother’s Day tribute to every single beautiful one of you that is a mama, a mama to be, a hopeful mama, a hurting mama, a mama who has lost, a mama who has found, and every single version that lies in between. We love you. We see you. We are thankful for you.
