June 16, 2022What is the Lymphatic System?
The lymphatic system is a network of connective tissues and organs that is responsible for draining and removing excess fluid and waste from your body. In addition, the lymphatic system also transports fats, water, proteins, and toxins to lymph nodes which are small clusters of cells located throughout the body that contain immune cells and work to fight infection.
What is Lymphatic Drainage?
Lymphatic drainage is the process by which your lymphatic system moves toxins out of your body tissues into the lymph nodes so they can be eliminated.
Studies have found that lymphatic drainage massage can benefit people with some of the following health issues:
Rheumatoid Arthritis
If you have rheumatoid arthritis, you may experience poor lymph flow as the disease progresses. Along with tissue swelling, pain in the joints increases, joints lose their function, and the skin changes color. Lymph drainage massage can help ease these later-stage rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.
Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI)
Chronic venous insufficiency is when the valves or walls of the veins that are in the legs don't work correctly. This makes it hard for the blood to flow back to the heart from the legs. Lymphatic drainage massage can help increase the speed of blood flow in people with CVI.
Fibromyalgia
This condition causes inflammation of the skin nerves, discoloration of the skin, and tissue swelling. The massage has been shown to be better than connective tissue massage in treating depression, stiffness, and improving quality of life for those living with fibromyalgia.
Lymphedema
Lymphedema, which involves swelling, generally in one of your legs or arms. The swelling is caused by lymph fluid that's collected in the soft tissues, due to genetic disorders, injury, infection, cancer treatment, or surgery.

- Hardening or thickening of the skin
- Recurring infections
How Does Lymphatic Drainage Massage Work?
Lymphatic drainage massage works by pulling toxins out of body tissues and transporting them through a fluid called lymph using lymph vessels, into the lymph nodes where the toxins are removed. Once toxins are removed, the result is fresh lymph fluid that continues circulating throughout the body to pick up and remove more toxins.
More importantly, the disrupted lymphatic drainage process reduces the effectiveness of your immune system because the removal of toxins is slowed down. Lymphatic drainage massage is a type of gentle massage that promotes the movement of lymph fluid throughout the body.
Essentially, the skin is gently stretched and released over known lymphatic pathways.
Lymphatic massage therapy is an amazing technique for reducing inflammation and fatigue, and is used to help rid the body of toxins. Lymphatic massage can help reduce stress and anxiety, boost your immune system, and when performed on the face allows for glowing younger looking skin.
Lymphatic drainage massage is a specialized massage type that gently assists the lymphatic system in maintaining the body’s fluid balance, blood circulation, and immune mechanisms.
The system’s network of vessels and nodes contains lymph, a mixture of water, proteins, immune system components, waste products, and other remnants of cell metabolism.
Lymph nodes, which filter out the debris, are found throughout the body, with especially large groups of them in the neck, armpits, and groin. These major collections of lymph nodes ensure that the lymph passes through as many nodes as possible before it returns to the circulatory system.
During a lymph drainage massage, a specially-trained massage therapist uses a series of gliding, compressing, stretching, and cupping motions over the client’s body. The light rhythmic movements, applied without massage oil, stimulate the lymphatic system without compressing the vessels – allowing lymph to move easily through the tissues and lymph nodes.
Lymphatic drainage massage follows a specific sequence over the body so lymph isn’t trapped anywhere, making sure every area is treated with care.
